The Breton commune is linked by its past to the legendary kingdom of Cornouaille. The barons and counts of Pont L’Abbé formed one of the largest seigneuries in the area. In the Middle Ages, they were responsible for the construction of many of the castles that are now the pride of Brittany on the French tourist map.

Inhabitants gradually developed a strong culture of trade by ship, to be succeeded by rail transport in the 19ᵉ century. This tradition has become so ingrained in modern habits that shops are omnipresent in Pont L’Abbé.

For visitors, the Bigouden Museum is the ideal starting point for discovering the town’s traditions. Here you can admire the fashions and furnishings that have accompanied the Pont-Labbistes over the centuries, including the famous Bigouden headdress.

The Barons’ castle and Lambour church are two of the most interesting tourist sites for immortalizing the beauty of Brittany’s medieval architecture.

The Notre-Dame de Carmes church, with its magnificent rose window, and the monument to the Bigoudens are also well worth a visit.
